Our Philosophy
Byram Hills Youth Lacrosse (BHYL) is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization run by volunteers. BHYL’s primary focus is to teach the sport of lacrosse to boys and girls in grades K-8, developing them into lacrosse players who will continue to play the sport beyond the youth level, ideally for Byram Hills High School at the JV and Varsity levels.
As the only youth lacrosse program primarily serving the Byram Hills community, we consider BHYL to be a hybrid recreational/travel program. As such, we do not cut kids from the program. However, in order to compete with other programs in the Hudson Valley Lacrosse League who do select players, we do not guarantee equal playing time to every player. BHYL has a policy of fair playing time—but fair playing time does not mean equal playing time. After second grade, playing time should be earned, not expected—and is earned based on commitment, dedication, effort, behavior, attitude, and skill.
Team composition is determined year-to-year based on registration numbers. While historically BHYL has mostly maintained grade-based teams, the decision of whether to combine grades will be made by the board on a year-by-year, team-by-team basis based on that season’s registration.
